Villages

There are several charming villages on Terschelling, each with its own character. West-Terschelling is the largest village, offering plenty of cafés, restaurants, and terraces. There are also museums to visit.

Midsland is the second-largest village on Terschelling, located in the middle of the island. Over the past century, it has undergone significant development. The village offers numerous amenities for both visitors and island residents, including many restaurants and opportunities for nightlife.

HOME TO THE ISLAND’S ONLY WINDMILL

The village has an open layout with scattered farms, some of which are among the oldest on Terschelling. A characteristic feature of the village is the Koffiemolen, the only windmill on the island.

Hoorn is situated between the villages of Lies and Oosterend. The village consists of various farms and houses along the main road, surrounded by residential developments built in the 1970s.

Oosterend is the last village on Terschelling, marking the end of the inhabited part of the island. Just outside Oosterend lies the cross-dike that separates the polder from the Boschplaat nature reserve.

THE FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH TERSCHELLING

The largest village on Terschelling is West-Terschelling. The ferries to the island arrive at the harbor of this village, with the Brandaris lighthouse in the background. Locals often simply refer to the village as “West.”

This village is located in the dunes along the Longway, between West-Terschelling and Midsland. It features holiday homes, the West aan Zee beach pavilion, the KNRM lifeboat house, and, of course, Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee.

Culture and Music

There’s plenty to do on Terschelling. Of course, the famous Oerol Festival takes place once a year, but there’s also a new dance festival, where you can dance in the middle of the forest until dawn. Here are some highlights of the many activities and events you can enjoy on the island.

Blues & Rock Café ’t Spyntje

The musical style of ’t Spyntje is as versatile as blues and rock allow. From Rory Gallagher to Rammstein, from Cuby and the Blizzards to Evanescence, it offers a wide selection from both genres.

Bunkers Terschelling

Inside the bunkers, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The guided tours start at the G54 bunker, located below the large Bertha bunker, and end at the visitor center. Unfortunately, the bunkers are not accessible for wheelchair users or small children.

Oerol

This cultural festival lasts ten days. Each year, Oerol features a different theme. There’s plenty of site-specific theater, with the island itself serving as a stage for street performances and musical acts.

Cyprian race

Every year, the Cyprian Race for horses and ponies is held on Terschelling. The Cyprian was a ship that sank off the coast of Terschelling during a storm. The race is organized in memory of the historic beachcomber races of the past.

Berenloop

For many runners, the Berenloop is a staple event on their running calendar. The beautiful but challenging course, enthusiastic volunteers, and cheering spectators along the way create a fantastic running experience. Moreover, the Berenloop is the perfect reason for a sporty and relaxing weekend on Terschelling.

Fjoertoer

This is a walking tour from Midsland to the Brandaris lighthouse, through beautiful nature and past unique light and fire installations created by local artists. You can walk 15, 20, or 25 km, and registration is required. Fjoertoer is a true walking festival for every hiker.
