EXPERIENCE THE ISLAND FEELING
Terschelling is an island full of surprises: from charming villages and stunning nature to unique museums, events, and activities on and around the water. Whether you enjoy culture, history, relaxation, or adventure, there is always something to discover.
Visit the most charming villages
On Terschelling, you’ll find a series of cozy villages, all within walking or cycling distance from Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee.
West-Terschelling buzzes with lively terraces and the Brandaris lighthouse towering above. In Midsland, wander through lively streets full of shops and quaint restaurants, while Formerum takes you to the peaceful island life among old farms and the characteristic Koffiemolen.
Hoorn and Oosterend feel warm and authentic, with winding streets, historic houses, and the vast nature of the Boschplaat just around the corner. In West aan Zee, you are right in the dunes, where the beach, sea air, and tranquility come together.
The Brandaris
The Brandaris is the proud center of Terschelling and the oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands. Since 1594, it has watched over the island and guided ships safely along the coast. As you enter the harbor of West-Terschelling, it immediately towers over the village. A warm welcome and the island’s iconic landmark.
At night, the lighthouse glows beautifully in the dark, and its beam can be seen sweeping across the sea. A visit is incomplete without pausing to admire this impressive guardian of the island.
Seal Watching
One of the most special experiences on Terschelling is a boat trip to the sandbanks where seals bask in the sun. From the harbor, you can sail directly onto the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site full of peace, space, and nature.
Along the way, you’ll spot curious seal heads popping above the water while others laze on the exposed sandbanks. The guide shares everything about life in and around the mudflats, making the trip not only beautiful but also educational. A relaxing outing that is unforgettable for both children and adults.
Festivals and Events
Terschelling is buzzing with unique events all year round. The most famous is Oerol, a ten-day cultural festival where the entire island transforms into a stage for site-specific theatre, music, and art installations.
Other annual highlights include sporting and cultural
events such as the Berenloop, one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful and challenging running races, and the Fjoertoer, an enchanting evening walk along light installations and special natural spots.
The Wrakkenmuseum
The Wrakkenmuseum on Terschelling is one of the most unique places on the island. The museum is full of items washed ashore and objects from shipwrecks, offering a fascinating glimpse into the maritime history of the area.
Inside, you’ll discover everything from old ship instruments to personal belongings of crew members, each with its own story.
The outdoor area is equally impressive, with creative constructions and playful corners that make the museum extra fun for children.
The Wrakkenmuseum is a surprising mix of history, adventure, and island humor, making it a must-visit for both young and old.
