The 5 Best Autumn Activities on Terschelling

Autumn might be the island's best kept secret. The summer crowds have gone, the beach is practically yours and the light above the dunes turns soft and golden. At the same time, more is happening than you would expect: the cranberry harvest is in full swing, the woods change colour and the events calendar runs well into November. We live and work here all year round, right in the dunes at West aan Zee, and every autumn we watch guests get pleasantly surprised by this season. In this blog we take you through the five best autumn activities, including the fixed events of this season.

1. Walking through woods, dunes and across the Boschplaat

Terschelling is at its finest for walkers in autumn. The temperature is comfortable, the mosquitoes are gone and the woods near Hoorn and Formerum are full of mushrooms. If you prefer the wild side, head to the Boschplaat, a vast nature reserve in the east of the island where you can walk for kilometres without meeting anyone.

In autumn the area is widely accessible, unlike during the spring breeding season. Wear waterproof shoes, because the dune valleys flood quickly after rain.

2. Beachcombing, storm watching and spotting seals

An autumn storm above the North Sea is a spectacle in itself. Dress warmly, walk over the dune crossing onto the beach and watch the sand race across the shore. After a good storm the beach becomes a treasure trove: shells, driftwood and sometimes genuinely unusual finds. Beachcombing belongs to this island, where entire houses were once built from wood that washed ashore.

On the Wadden Sea side you regularly see seals resting on the sandbanks at low tide. With binoculars and a little patience you often succeed within half an hour. Always check the tide table before you go, it saves you a wasted trip.

Back into the warmth

From our hotel it is a few minutes from the beach to the heated indoor pool, the sauna and the steam room. Salty wind first, warm water afterwards. That is the perfect autumn day on Terschelling.

3. The Berenloop, the sporting highlight of the season

On Sunday 1 November 2026 the Berenloop takes place, with a full and a half marathon through the dunes, along the beach and through the villages. The start and finish are at the foot of the Brandaris lighthouse in West-Terschelling. The whole island turns out for this event, with spectators along the route and an atmosphere that brings runners back year after year.

On Saturday 31 October 2026 there is the Kleintje Berenloop and the youth run, ideal as a warm up or if you are taking part with children. If you plan to run, book your accommodation and ferry well in advance, because the island is traditionally full that weekend.

Worth it even without a race number

If you prefer to watch, pick a spot in the dunes or near the beach. That is where you see the runners on their hardest and most beautiful kilometres.

4. Culture, markets and the darkest nights in the Netherlands

Autumn is also the cultural season on Terschelling. In October artists open their doors and the villages turn into small stages.

Witches' Market in Midsland

On 14 October 2026 the Oosterburen area in Midsland transforms into a witches' market, complete with pumpkins, lanterns, broomsticks and fire baskets. One of the most atmospheric evenings of the autumn holidays and great fun for all ages.

Art in the Church and Kunst te Kijk

From 12 to 24 October 2026 artists and photographers exhibit in the church. On 15 October 2026 it is time for Kunst te Kijk, featuring poetry, paintings, glass, wood, ceramics and beachcombing finds.

HNight of the Night

On 23 and 24 October 2026 Oosterend celebrates the Nacht van de Nacht. Terschelling still has real darkness, so on a clear night you see stars here that disappeared from the mainland long ago. Bring a torch with a red light and give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust.

5. Picking and tasting cranberries, the red gold of Terschelling

Nowhere else in the Netherlands does the cranberry grow so abundantly in the wild. Island lore says a small barrel of cranberries washed ashore more than a century ago, after which the berry felt right at home in the damp, acidic dune valleys. The professional harvest usually starts in the first week of September and continues into October, entirely by hand using a traditional picking box.

Want to pick your own? It is not allowed everywhere. Once the official harvest is finished, the growers release certain fields for gleaning. Always ask locally first so you know you are in the right spot.

Practical tips for your autumn visit

Book the ferry early for event weekends, especially around the Berenloop and the autumn school holidays. Bring windproof clothing and waterproof shoes, because island weather changes fast. Rent a bike, since it takes you to places a car never reaches. Check the tide table if you are heading to the Wadden Sea side, and keep in mind that some restaurants and cafés keep shorter opening hours outside the main season.

Book your autumn stay at Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee

Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee sits right in the dunes at West aan Zee, a few minutes' walk from the North Sea beach. You sleep in spacious rooms and suites with views over the dunes or the sea, dine in our restaurant using island produce and unwind after a day outdoors in the heated pool, the sauna and the steam room. The walking and cycling routes start at our doorstep, and the cranberry fields and the beach are literally around the corner.
