What a Relaxing Day at Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee Looks Like
Time moves differently on Terschelling. As soon as the ferry from Harlingen docks, you feel the pace drop. At Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee, high on the dunes of West aan Zee, it slows down even further. The beach is on your doorstep, you can see the North Sea from your room, and there’s nothing you have to do. That’s what makes a day here so relaxing. No need for the car, no schedule to keep. Breakfast, the pool, the sauna and the restaurant are all under one roof, and the beach starts just a few steps away. So what does a day like that look like? We’ll take you from your first coffee on the balcony to the moment you open the balcony door one last time at night.
Morning: waking up above the dunes
The view from your balcony
Most rooms look out over the dunes, with the North Sea beyond. Make a coffee from the machine in your room, sit out on the balcony and look across the water. On a clear day the view reaches the coast near Harlingen.
Breakfast without a rush
The breakfast buffet has fresh bread, eggs, fruit, yoghurt and both savoury and sweet options. Vegetarian and gluten-free guests are well catered for too. Take a table by the window and stay as long as you like. Nobody rushes you.
Afternoon: swimming, sauna and nothing to do
The beach on your doorstep
One of the widest beaches in the Netherlands lies right in front of the hotel. Walk half an hour along the tideline with the wind in your face; outside the season you often have it almost to yourself.
The indoor pool
After a light lunch you can walk straight into the indoor pool. A few lengths or simply drifting, and as a hotel guest there’s nothing to book.
Sauna and steam room
The sauna and steam room are where you really switch off: warm up, cool down, repeat. Afterwards, a book from the library and a spot in the lounge.
Evening: dinner at the Paal 8 restaurant
A table overlooking the dunes
Book a table in the afternoon to be sure of a spot by the window. You look out over the dunes as the sun goes down. Fish feels right on an island, beautifully presented and full of flavour, with staff who sense when to come over and when to leave you be. Round off the evening with a glass of wine at the bar.
The balcony door open one last time
Back in your suite, open the balcony door for the sound of wind and sea. A comfortable armchair, the last light over the dunes, and a night when your mind is finally clear.
