ENJOY RESPONSIBLY AND SUSTAINABLY

At Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee, we take great care of our guests—but we also feel it’s our duty to protect our environment. We want future generations to continue enjoying our hotel and everything Terschelling has to offer. That’s why we are continuously committed to socially responsible business practices and are always looking for new ways to enhance sustainability and increase our positive impact on the environment and society.

Dishes with Sustainable Ingredients

Our menu is guided not only by taste and presentation but also by sustainability. We work closely with suppliers who provide fair and organic (local) products that meet the highest quality and sustainability standards from trusted certifications.

Sleep on Sustainable Egyptian Cotton

Starting fall 2024, we will switch to luxurious DOUXE bed linens made from Egyptian cotton (certified by the Egyptian Cotton Association) and produced in Portugal. This ensures a perfect balance between comfort and sustainability. The more the linens are washed, the softer they become, making them more comfortable and a sustainable long-term investment. DOUXE minimizes waste and recycles by-products wherever possible.n en reststoffen zoveel mogelijk te recyclen.

Energy-Efficient LED Lighting

The entire hotel uses LED lighting, reducing electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions. Timers and motion sensors help prevent unnecessary energy waste, without compromising guest safety.

Naturally-Based Soap

Throughout the hotel, refillable soap dispensers with Marie Stella Maris body care products are available. These products are at least 96% naturally derived, free from parabens, silicones, petrochemicals, microplastics, and harmful sulfates such as SLS and SLES. They are also produced in the Netherlands and are 100% vegan. Refilling dispensers reduces waste and CO₂ emissions.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Plan

In collaboration with Diversey, a hygiene and cleaning products manufacturer, we have developed an environmentally conscious cleaning plan. This ensures our hotel stays clean while minimizing environmental impact.

Thoughtful Waste Management

We aim to produce as little waste as possible, reusing and recycling products wherever feasible. Waste is carefully sorted, including glass, plastic, organic waste, oils, fats, cartridges, and batteries.

Smarter Use of Water and Energy

Water-saving showerheads and flow restrictors on all taps reduce water waste. We also use an advanced heat pump for both heating and cooling. Waste heat from our updated central heating system heats the pool water, lowering energy use.

Encouraging Eco-Friendly Mobility

Guests are encouraged to explore Terschelling on foot or by bike. Free bus transport to and from the harbor is provided on arrival and departure days, reducing car use and emissions on the island.

Actively Reducing Your Footprint

Guests can choose not to have their room cleaned during their stay, contributing to a lower ecological footprint. Those who participate receive a restaurant voucher. Guests can also indicate which towels need washing; towels left on the rack are reused, while those in the bath are replaced.

Green Key Gold Certification

All our efforts in sustainable and socially responsible practices have been recognized with the Green Key Gold certificate, meeting the highest sustainability standards in the hotel industry. We remain committed to ensuring guests have a pleasant stay while making a positive impact on the environment and climate.
